Conference rooms

A contemporary venue with an ancient past

The Old Infirmary, photographed by Trust volunteer Ben Osborne

This beautiful medieval building was originally part of Shrewsbury Abbey, developed 900 years ago. Pilgrims once flocked here to see the bones of St Winifred, a 7th century virgin whose head was cut off in fury by a frustrated young nobleman, but miraculously restored while the wicked young man fell dead. It is believed the Old Infirmary housed the pilgrims during their visits.

Today the Old Infirmary is once again a place of hospitality, a well-established conference and events venue.

On the ground floor is the Garden Room, which seats 60 people theatre-style or 20 in a boardroom layout. Upstairs, the Infirmary Room is wonderfully spacious and distinctive with light filtering through the high stained glass window; it can seat up to 100. Access is either by lift, indoor stairs or the oak timbered steps from the garden.

The garden, with its herb beds, roses and fruit trees, is open to all who use the Old Infirmary. Cloisters enclose the gardens, providing shelter from the weather if needed.

Home made food including a variety of sandwiches and delicious cakes is available. Locally produced ingredients are sourced wherever possible.

A wide range of audio-visual equipment can be supplied by arrangement.
