Last year around 400 volunteers gave the Trust over 2,250 days work.
Volunteers play their part at every level of Shropshire Wildlife Trust, whether it's helping to look after nature reserves, office tasks, surveying, running Wildlife Watch groups, gardening at the Trust's HQ in Shrewsbury, running local branches or acting as trustees.
We take the management and supervision of our volunteers seriously and so have to be careful with managing numbers. However, if you are keen, enthusiastic or have a particular skill that you think we would be interested in, then please do contact us. It’s always worth keeping a check on our website to see what opportunities are available. We are part of a network of environmental volunteering organisations in Shropshire, so if we can’t offer you a place then we are happy to signpost you to an organisation that might.
Volunteer opportunities
Event support We are currently recruiting volunteers to help us run and deliver our events. The team is split into two roles: event management which is helping behind the scenes with setting up and taking down, and event welcome which is the face to face, hospitality role. We run quarterly training sessions for event support volunteers. Contact us to find out dates. More about event support volunteering
Wardens
We are currently looking for wardens for the following reserves: Nipstone, The Hollies and Earl’s Hill in south Shropshire and Llanymynech Rocks and Nant Mawr in the Oswestry Hills. We prefer wardens to live within 5 miles of a reserve; unfortunately we are unable to pay travel expenses. Please contact Diane Monether if you are interested.
Work parties
Are you looking for fresh air, fun and exercise? If so, you might consider joining one of our regular week day work parties to help with important and worthwhile practical conservation on nature reserves around Shropshire. During the autumn and winter the work tends to be heavier and involves mainly clearance of scrub. We often have a fire and it’s a great way to
get fit. During the spring and summer, because of the bird nesting season, the work tends to be lighter and less dramatic! We carry out repairs to fences, clear path edges, install stiles, gates and carry out site surveys and monitoring.
We provide transport to the site, all the tools and training. All you need is a packed lunch, at least 1 litre of water to drink and a flask in the winter. You’ll need to wear layers because weather conditions can change quickly, and old clothes, not your best walking gear, as it can get damaged by thorns and fire sparks. You’ll need strong shoes or boots and/or wellington boots, and most importantly a waterproof coat and trousers.
The work party leaves from our Shrewsbury headquarters at 9am. The work is very popular and places on the minibus are limited, so if you want to take part, please contact us first to book a place on the minibus.
