Over the past three years Shropshire Wildlife Trust has worked hard in the Telford area. It has developed the Wrekin Forest Volunteers, run major schools projects, worked with local businesses, helped young people find inspiration in the natural world and looked after woods, wetlands and other good wildlife areas.
But Telford’s green spaces are under threat. By 2025 the town will have another 26,500 houses. The Trust is deeply concerned that the borough’s beautiful, much-loved wild areas should neither be sacrificed nor damaged in the rush to achieve these targets
We don’t dispute that people need homes, but development must take place in the right place with the minimum possible damage to wildlife. We believe Telford’s residents should continue to enjoy nature on their doorstep.
This is a crucial moment. If things are allowed to drift much may be lost. But the process of change and development can be managed positively. We need to ensure that the very best wild places survive intact and do not become isolated. The best way to do this is to work with town planners at an early stage, so that they know the places that are sacrosanct.
