ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES

Planning, support & school grounds development
Shropshire Wildlife Trust can help you plan activities and trips linking directly to your planning. Call us in for PD days to give you advice on developing you grounds and making the most of the wild places on your doorstep.
KS1-4

Green Space Audit
A report that is unique to your school which advises on using your school grounds for environmental education. We find green spaces within a 10 minute walk of your school then offer you suggestions and instructions for using and improving your space - both for you and for wildlife.

ACTIVITIES

Bug Hunting
A firm favourite - explore your grounds or a reserve looking for spiders, slugs and centipedes. Discover a world beneath your feet and understand its importance for wildlife. Open your eyes to the array of minibeasts that are found all around us with an expert guide.
National curriculum links: habitats / science investigation / adaptations/food chains.
KS 1-2

Tracks and Trails
Become a nature detective and learn about local wildlife using tracks and trails in wild places near you. Lots of practical activities undertaken, providing a great resource for further work.
Explore the area using careful observation and sketch your discoveries. Make a treasure box for the classroom from what you find and learn more about connections in the living world.
National curriculum links: scientific investigation / habitats / adaptations/food chains.
KS 1 - 2

Senses
Explore your surroundings using smell, touch and sight.
Listen to natural sounds and create a symphony. Come to a smelly party!
Use simple words to describe the wonder of the natural world.
National curriculum links: Care for living things/knowledge and understanding of the world/local area study.
Foundation + KS1-2

Nature's Art
Look closely at patterns, shapes and textures from the natural world. Take inspiration and create a natural sculpture or painting using materials you find around you.
Use a range of skills to capture a mood, a view or a moment.
Reflective and active. Work with an artist to develop longer term projects.
KS1-2

Shropshire Habitats
Suitable as an introduction to the work of Shropshire Wildlife Trust.
An interactive presentation that encompasses geology, climate and key ecological terms.

KS 2-3

Owl Pellets
A real hoot!
Dissect an owl pellet from a Shropshire barn owl.
A gruesome but entertaining way to understand food chains and the importance of habitat conservation in Shropshire.
National curriculum links: PSHE / habitats / food chains / adaptations/caring for our world.
KS2-3

GCSE and A level fieldwork
Let us guide your class through a field work session at a local site. This is your chance to make a real contribution to conservation in Shropshire. We will design introductory sessions that demonstrate key ecological and geographical terms using real examples. Develop fieldwork techniques and use scientific equipment.
Short training sessions are also available for teachers.

Pond Dipping
You're never too old to pond dip. Get to grips with habitats, food chains and adaptation with a practical session on a Shropshire Wildlife Trust reserve, or in your grounds. We support the session with a range of activities for different age groups. Suitable for secondary science too.

KS1-4

Climate change in Shropshire
How will climate change affect Shropshire's wildlife? What evidence can we look for? Fieldwork on the Trust's nature reserves and a discussion about what we can do to help protect our local landscapes and way of life.
National curriculum links: Citizenship/local studies/PSHE/ecology.
KS2-4

Maps
A perfect way to prepare for a school trip to a nature reserve. We tell the story of the reserve and help pupils draw a map of where they're going. Supported by the Wildlife Trust's maps + a themed resource box.
National curriculum links: Map skills/local area study/enquiry skills/use of secondary sources.
KS 1-2

Landfill, materials and recycling
Wood Lane only. A trailer tour around an active quarry and landfill site. Discover materials found in a quarry and their uses. Discuss landfill and recycling and find out the importance of recycling schemes in Shropshire.
National curriculum links: local studies/PSHE/caring for the environment.
KS1-4
