Philanthropy and major gifts
Major gifts can have an impact much greater than their monetary value. They allow us to innovate, to support essential specialist functions, or to seize emerging opportunities, when traditional grant funding might not be available.Chief Executive, Shropshire Wildlife Trust
Major gifts are transformational, not transactional
The key to unlocking the fullest potential from your donation is a conversation. We would love to talk with you about your vision for your gift and how that aligns with the work we are doing or would like to do. We have painstakingly mapped out the next 5 years of work towards our vision of a thriving natural world in Shropshire and we'll be able to identify key places where your gift could unlock work that we don't have committed funding for, scale up something we've already gotten off the ground or take on an opportunity that we may have otherwise had to miss.
How a major gift and a chat unlocked 50 hectares of habitat
In the summer of 2023 we were offered a very generous donation from a dedicated supporter. With her blessing, we held onto the donation, knowing that in the near future there would be an opportunity to do something special with her gift. That opportunity came around a year later when we purchased our newest and largest nature reserve Betchcott Hill. With this gift we were able to purchase outright the 7 ha local wildlife site next door to the 43 ha in need of restoration (which was purchased with funds from our public appeal).
By purchasing these neighbouring pockets of land, one in need of restoration and one in need of protection, we have been able to undertake a larger-scale restoration project, create more connectivity in the landscape and do what Wildlife Trusts do best - protect existing wildlife havens and recreate new ones.
Let's talk
If you'd like to give a major gift or have a chat about how your donation could help transform wild places in Shropshire, we'd love to hear from you.

Tax-efficient giving
There are several tax incentives available to encourage charitable giving. By making the most of these incentives, you can save on taxes and maximise the value of your donation.
Gift Aid
If you are a UK taxpayer, the value of your gift can be increased by 25 percent under the Gift Aid scheme at no extra cost to you. This means that for every £10 you give we receive £12.50, and it doesn't cost you a penny.
You will need to let us know that your donations are eligible for Gift Aid by completing a Gift Aid declaration. It is also your responsibility to update us if your donations are no longer eligible for Gift Aid.
Inheritance tax
Under current legislation Inheritance Tax at 40% is payable on your taxable estate. However, gifts to exempt beneficiaries, including charities like Shropshire Wildlife Trust, are free of Inheritance Tax and are deducted from your estate before Inheritance Tax is calculated.
Additionally, anyone leaving 10% or more of their net estate to charity will qualify for a reduced rate of Inheritance Tax of 36% on their taxable assets, which could save a considerable amount.
